How you can use this French Literacy Center resource:
- Bingo Games: you could play Bingo with your entire class, in small groups, or students can play it individually. I suggest using the spinner when students play individually or in small groups. Students will spin the spinner (use a paper clip and a pencil) and identify the image that begins with that letter. Review the vocabulary and letter sounds before playing to encourage your students to name the objects independently and listen for the beginning sound. I have also included a reference sheet that can be helpful for some students.
-
- Beginning Sound Bingo with pictures – you could use the letter calling cards and ask the students what sound it makes, then they will look at their bingo cards and find the image that begins with that sound. For example, you pick the letter T and say the sound /T/ and your students will look for the image of the ‘tortue” on their card.
-
- Initial Sound Bingo with letters – you could use the picture calling cards, say the image’s name, and ask the students what letter it begins with. Then, they will look for the letter on their BIngo card (I’ve included both uppercase and lowercase letter cards). For example, you pick “mouton” and then sound out the word slowly, emphasizing the beginning sound and the students will find the letter M on their cards.
-
- Beginning Sound Bingo with letters – you can use the letter calling cards and say the sound, then students will look and find the letter on their Bingo card (I’ve included both uppercase and lowercase letter cards). For example, you pick the letter B and say /b/, /b/, /b/ comme banane.
-
- French Alphabet Bingo – you can use the letter calling cards, and the students can match upper and lowercase letters on their cards. So, for example, you choose the uppercase letter Y, and students look for the lowercase Y on their Bingo cards, or you show them the lowercase letter, and they find the uppercase letter.
-
- Vocabulary Bingo – use the picture calling cards, and students will look for the same image on their Bingo cards. For example, you choose “une citrouille,” and the students will look for the picture of a pumpkin on their Bingo card.
- Memory Games: print and laminate the calling cards. I suggest printing them on cardstock so they last longer. Students lay the cards face down. The first student picks two cards; if they are a pair, they get to keep the cards. However, if they are not a pair, the student returns the cards face down where they found them, and it is the next student’s turn.
-
- Letter Recognition Memory – letter matching (same case, match uppercase with uppercase or lowercase with lowercase letters) – print out two copies of the uppercase or lowercase letters, and students will have to find the matching pairs. You can always add a little twist to the game by asking the students to say the letter name or sound as they play. Students will practice their French alphabet, letter recognition and initial French sounds.

- Letter Recognition Memory – letter matching (different case, match upper and lowercase letters) – print out the uppercase and the lowercase calling cards and students will have to find the matching pairs. You can always add a little twist to the game by asking the students to say the letter name or sound as they play. Students will practice their French alphabet, letter recognition and French initial sounds.
-
- Picture Match Memory – print two copies of the image calling cards on cardstock (optional) and laminate them. Students will have to find a matching picture. You can always add a little twist to the game by asking the students to say the vocabulary word or beginning sound of the images as they play. This will add another opportunity to add some initial sound practice and oral communication.
-
- Beginning Sound Memory: print one copy of the picture calling cards and one of the letter calling cards (either uppercase or lowercase). Students will match the image with the beginning sound (the initial letter). You can always add a little twist to the game by asking the students to say the beginning sound of the images they choose and the letter sounds they pick as they play. The more communication oral, initial sound, and letter sound practice, the better!
You can use this French Literacy Center in many ways, and your students can play one of the games at their level. The Bingo games are excellent when working in small groups to practice identifying letters and initial sounds in French. Review the vocabulary on each card and the initial sounds, and have the students repeat the words and initial sounds back to you. It is important that your students listen to the beginning sound.
It is easy to prepare this French Alphabet Literacy Center; simply print the cards/pages you want in color or black and white, laminate and cut!
My students always have so much fun when they can stamp or use Bingo dabbers on their Bingo cards. So there is no need to laminate if you let your students do this too.
Besides the various literacy games available with this resource, you can also incorporate the Bingo and Memory games into your morning tubs. These games are calm and can be played alone using the spinners. They are perfect for reviewing French vocabulary, letter recognition, and beginning sounds.
The best part is that your students will be so engaged and have so much fun practicing literacy skills that will help them become stronger readers.
